The Essex Caledonian Pipe Band was formed over a decade ago after the amalgamation and dissolutions of the Harwich, Brentwood and Red Hackle Pipe Bands, and despite some tough times in the early days has moved from strength to strength and are now based in Chelmsford.
Since then the band has become one of only a few competition standard pipe bands in the south east, regularly playing in Scotland and Belgium.
Being entirely self managed and funded, the band relies on income from carnivals, fetes, military festivals, and even the St Patricks Day parade in London. This goes towards purchasing instruments, regular hire of a practice hall, uniforms and even drinks in the beer tent, although this is rarer than some might prefer.
The band prides itself on having a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and despite being a successful competition band, all the members know that it is primarily a social group, winning prizes is just the icing on the cake. New members are always welcome, and the band is constantly gaining and losing members of all abilities, from complete novices to grade 2 players.
There are currently over 30 members of all ages on the roster:
Pipe Major-Wally Wallace
